My Mother's Ability to Control Diabetes

by S. Muneer
(Kerala)

My mother has been a chronic diabetic patient for a long time. She is 60 years old now and has about 35 years of diabetic history. She managed to control her blood sugar levels without 'Insulin'.

She has a special way to maintain a balanced diet. So I think she has defeated diabetes with eating very well. When I asked her how she controlled her blood glucose levels, her reply was: "Diabetic patients should not avoid nutritious foods. Good foods are very very important in the case of a diabetic patient, but they must avoid sugar and sweets, and they are usually fine with the sugar- fructose in fruits".

She now eats fruits like pineapple, apple, mango and grapes daily. The composition of her diet in a typical day would be:

Vegetables- slightly cooked: 30%

Fruits: 20%

Whole wheat: 40%

Others- oats, barley etc: 10%

She never used regular medicine to control her glucose levels and she is very healthy at the age of 60. Isn't it amazing when you know she has been a victim- or a victor of diabetes for 35 years?! She is such a wise woman and I am very glad to have her around us.
