Saving Money on Groceries

You can start saving money on groceries today.. There is no doubt that a big part of every personal budget is food costs as grocery shopping can become quite expensive, especially for those with a family to feed.

You will find some suggestions below to get you thinking about how you might be able to start saving money on groceries next time you go shopping for food:

Saving money on groceries

• First of all, don't expect to follow all of these tips at once. But if a few make sense, print it out and work the list, one week at a time. To make the most difference, determine where there's the most to save in your family finances, work those first.

• Have a budget and stick to it.

• Go shopping alone and not when hungry, don't take your kids with you.

Check your cupboards, pantry, and fridge before leaving for the shops.

• Take your calculator to the store with you, I noticed on many occasions that single item cost less that buying in a bulk, in a very strange way.

• Think of the various places that you buy and consume food including the food and drink machines at work, not just the supermarkets.

• Simply buy what you need, eliminate or limit all except the essentials. This actually applies to all your shopping- everything you buy.

• Eliminate the cost of labor and other business expenses by cooking yourself. You will also know what goes into your food, not only will it be cheaper.

Recycle.. Leftovers from the roast that you made last night, use some in sandwiches and in tomorrow's stew and maybe some in a soup today.

• Buy real, simple and whole foods that have not been cooked or processed by a food company previously and use them as ingredients in your healthy meals.

Avoid the not-so-necessary refined foods that are full of sugar, salt and fat and low in dietary fiber, such as ice-creams, frozen pastries and pizzas, potato chips and more.

• Check for items on special, store grocery coupons, 'buy one, get one free' deals and discounts on store cards. Check the store’s website for printable coupons.

• Be flexible about brands and stores. Visit multiple stores to get the best deals and shop at the store with the best prices for your items that week.

Planning your meals in advance also helps you avoid impulse shopping during your trip.

• Use credit cards offering cash back or points on grocery purchases. Just be sure to pay your card in full – rewards credit cards can be useful tools, but they can also be dangerous if you build up debt.

• Don’t be afraid of cheaper store brands, you may be surprised to find that they can taste so much better than brands that cost 3 times more.

Drink more water, avoid unhealthy drinks like sodas, squash and alcohol that will cost heaps more and are bad for you.

• And last but not least for saving money on groceries, check your bill before you leave the store, pricing errors are very common at the supermarkets.

*Here I'd like to tell you about my favorite diet program that uses a lot of the healthy lower GI foods: Isabel de los Rios' 'The Diet Solution Program'.

The Diet Solution Program favours a long term health orientated approach to fat loss, but not offering anyone a quick fix to their weight troubles. It has loads of valuable data and research to support its approach. I personally investigated the program thoroughly and my mum has been using it for a while now. I have to say she got some great results.

The nutrition plan is one of the healthiest we have seen, a strong core focus on vegetables, fruits, vitamin dense foods, lean proteins, select dairy produce and a clear approach to not expecting one diet to work for all body types. So give it a try and let me know how you’re doing.*
