Spirulina Side Effects

As a consumer it is not unusual for you to wonder whether there are bad spirulina side effects or not, even though it has been praised as the best superfood so many times, especially by the Japanese due to its high antioxidant content.

Spirulina is widely available in tropical shores of South East Asia because of the sun and the static lagoons in the area. It is a spiral shaped algae first found in natural alkaline lakes of South America and Africa ; a completely natural and a highly nutritious micro salt water plant that is currently quite hot for its therapeutic applications. It has already been proven that spirulina can be quite beneficial for your body.

Spirulina Benefits:

Spirulina has been an important part of many communities’ diet for centuries and since 70s it has been commonly used as a dietary supplement in certain countries. American NASA have chosen to use it for astronauts' food in space, and even plan to grow and harvest it in space stations.

Spirulina is not a medicine as such, but as a good source of supplementary nutrition that can help you avoid illnesses caused by nutrient deficiencies and give you less of a chance to get sick. The popularity of spirulina stems from the fact that it contains over 100 kinds of nutrients. It is described to be the most complete food source ever - "The Superfood" as most call it.

Spirulina contains 3 -4 times more protein than beef or fish (vegetable protein content of %65+), 10 vitamins, a wide range of minerals- iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus etc., phytonutrients, phycocyanin (only found in spirulina), beta-carotene (40 times more than spinach and 5 times more than carrots) , gamma-linolein acid to help reduce cholesterol and prevent heart disease.

It is known to lower cholesterol, help protect cells from degeneration, assist in digestion, keep the body energized, and contain proteins which people who are trying to avoid eating meat usually miss out on. Taking spirulina can reduce the development of cancerous cells and boost the body’s immune system.

As a super food, it can help you with weight loss, but not by making you lose your appetite but by nourishing the body with all the necessary nutrients so it doesn’t crave for unhealthy foods. You won’t feel light headed even if you undergo a low carbohydrate diet.

Spirulina Side Effects

The amazing benefits of taking the spirulina supplement outnumber the spirulina side effects, so you shouldn’t hesitate to try it. It is a generally well-tolerated supplement as long as you don’t take more than ten to fifteen grams per day.

Beta- carotenoids that spirulina contains in high amounts can interact negatively with certain blood pressure and hormonal medications.

You can reduce your risks of suffering from potential spirulina side effects by consulting your doctor before using it. Try and take in small doses first to see how it’s going, then increase the dosage.

This is a marine product and you could be allergic to it so if you experience any allergy symptoms such as swelling, difficulty breathing and rashes, stop using and seek medical help right away.

Please also note that spirulina from polluted sources can lead to side effects by building up excess levels of lead, mercury and cadmium in your system.

So you are now aware that you may experience some minor symptoms after taking the spirulina. And these side effects include:

• Slight fever as the body will need to burn extra protein

• Dizziness

• Increased pain in areas where there is already pain in case of migraines, rheumatism, ulcers etc.

• The colour of your face can change to greenish or even blackish, as a simple reaction to diet change

• Cold or flu like symptoms if you already suffer from a respiratory illness

• Excessive flatulence

• Nausea

• Thirst

• Constipation

• Stomach pain and other gastrointestinal symptoms

• Skin itching

• Impaired liver function due to high content of minerals and vitamins

• Kidney problems by increased levels of uric acid

*Here I'd like to tell you about my favorite diet program that uses a lot of the healthy lower GI foods: Isabel de los Rios' 'The Diet Solution Program'.

The Diet Solution Program favours a long term health orientated approach to fat loss, but not offering anyone a quick fix to their weight troubles. It has loads of valuable data and research to support its approach. I personally investigated the program thoroughly and my mum has been using it for a while now. I have to say she got some great results.

The nutrition plan is one of the healthiest we have seen, a strong core focus on vegetables, fruits, vitamin dense foods, lean proteins, select dairy produce and a clear approach to not expecting one diet to work for all body types. So give it a try and let me know how you’re doing.*
