Weight Reducing Diet for Diabetics

by Sweetu

What's Good for Diabetics?

What's Good for Diabetics?

As a long-term diabetic for twenty odd years, I learned a few things along the way. For those diabetes patients that are overweight, weight loss is mandatory and this depends on dietary modification and exercise. I know because I was overweight, in fact obese.

So weight loss is an important part of the treatment in diabetes. This helps in controlling blood sugar levels, blood pressure along with cholesterol and tri-glyceride levels. I make sure I include low calorie foods in my diet, even though I am at my ideal weight now, I have to maintain it.

Salads, leafy green vegetables and boiled vegetables add bulk to the food, contain fibers and they are very low in calories. I avoid saturated or trans fat rich foods at all times. I cook at home a lot more now, which makes it much cheaper and healthier than eating out.

I avoid full cream milk, fried foods, and egg yolk, fruit juices as they are high in sugar content instead opt for skimmed low fat milk, whole fruits, steamed, boiled, baked or roasted foods.

Dietary fiber relieves constipation. It is also essential for cardiovascular diseases and colon cancer. Diets rich in fiber have low calorific value and low glycemic index. So it is advisable for diabetic people to have high dietary fiber foods. I also have foods, which are rich in coarse cereal grain, husked pulses instead of refined foods like flour. I have been on this diet for about twelve years. I am at my ideal weight and feel great although I am a long-term diabetic.

Each individual should develop their own motivational skills, which will help them in attaining their ideal body weight. Yoga and meditation helped me a lot to keep focused on my weight loss and healthy eating goals.
