Eat Fish to Live Longer

Eat Fish to Live Longer.. A recent study reveals that people 65 years and older with the highest levels of omega -3 in their blood live  2.2 years longer on average than those with the lowest levels of these fatty acids contained primarily in fatty fish such as salmon.

So these older adults may reduce their risk of all-cause mortality by up to 27% and by about 35 % of cardiovascular diseases, say the researchers from Universities of Harvard and Washington.

Fish rich in Omega 3 fatty acids has long been regarded as a healthy food, but little research had previously evaluated the beneficial effects of omega- 3 for the health of older adults so far.

The results of this study confirm the importance of adequate levels of omega -3 in the blood for cardiovascular health and suggests that later in life, these benefits may actually extend the number of years left to live.

The researchers analyzed 16 years of statistics, which covered approximately 2700 adults aged 65 and older in the United States, who participated in a long-term study of cardiovascular health conducted by the National Institute of Health ( NIH).

Participants came from the states of North Carolina, Maryland and Pennsylvania and were generally healthy at the beginning of the research.

The authors of this study sought to clarify the effects of fatty acids on health, examining biomarkers in the blood of adults not taking omega-3 supplement from fish oil.

They were able to assess the potential effects of regular consumption of fish on multiple causes of death.

Omega-3 helps to stabilize the operation of cardiac cells. They are also involved in intercellular communication.

This study was not randomized, the results do not prove that the benefits observed are actually all because of fish. However, the authors advise everyone, especially after 65 years of age, to include two servings of fish per week in their diet.

The fish rich on Omega 3 fatty acids include mackerel, sardines, salmon, herring, trout, squid, sea bass, eel and tuna.
