How I Convinced My Husband to Change His Eating Habits

My husband was an athlete during his college years. He used to make fun of me calling me a balloon. The balloon gets easily inflated and deflated. I too easily put on weight after undergoing severe diet and exercise plans, I would lose weight. Once I let loose a little, I would put on weight. Time and again the same thing happened. I couldn’t understand where I was going wrong.

I used to take long walks in the morning, fifteen minutes exercise before having bath, did most of the housework, went for a walk in the evening. If I continued this routine, I was good. If I stopped this routine, once again inflated like a balloon. It was not easy to keep up with this routine and at one point I got frustrated and started getting used to my overweight appearance.

But inwardly I always longed to have a perfect figure, and wear the dresses I liked and most of all feel comfortable when I took classes at school and at my personality development classes in the evenings. After all what was the point of learning how to improve my personality without feeling good about my appearance?

Then I tried a low GI diet which was largely of rotis, boiled vegetables, egg whites, skimmed milk, whole fruits and nuts with dates, and limiting my party food to vegetarian and BINGO! I hit it. I started maintaining a perfect figure. If not for others I felt good for myself, and I wasn’t tired all the time anymore.

In the meantime, my husband due to his sedentary lifestyle and eating habits, started putting on weight. It was my turn to call him balloon. But this time the balloon kept on inflating, there seemed no chance for it to deflate. Observing me, my husband got interested in my diet plan and asked me to put him on the same:

To start the day– A glass of goose-berry juice with a pinch of salt.

Breakfast – 3 oil free rotis made of whole wheat flour + boiled vegetables seasoned with olive oil or dhal with greens.

Or mint and coriander chutney with spring onions

At 11 am – a cup of vegetable salad with lemon juice and chat masala

Lunch – a small cup of rice, 1 roti, two cups of boiled vegetables, half a guava or a piece of papaya.

At 4 pm a cup of tea with 2 plain biscuits with a few peanuts.

Dinner – 3 home made wheat dosas made with whole wheat flour, a little spicy chicken gravy with very little oil or any other vegetable gravy with olive oil.

To make the diet plan interesting and appealing I used different vegetables and fruits, which my husband had not even tasted. I made rotis of different flavours adding mint, or any other greens and vegetables. It really worked.

I made him stop snacking, which he was addicted to. He started losing weight slowly and we are both content.
