Insomnia Home Remedies

Insomnia can be cured by ‘insomnia home remedies’ on many occasions. It literally means total lack of sleep and can either be chronic or acute- shorter term.

However it is used to describe different sleep troubles such as:

• Falling asleep despite being very tired

• Staying asleep

• Waking up too early

• Not being able to go back to sleep

• Not feeling well and refreshed after waking up

If you are suffering from insomnia, you are more likely to have an accident, to develop different kinds of diseases and to be diagnosed with depression.

What Causes Insomnia?

• Most obvious cause of insomnia is mental or psychological– being worried, stressed, anxious or overexcited.

• Eating before bed, overeating or going to bed hungryconstipation, excessive caffeine intake or smoking.

• Too much light or noise in your room.

Worrying too much about falling asleep.

Pain in any part of your body, even simple headaches or itching.

Insomnia Home Remedies:

• Lectucarium substance in lettuce is effective in treating insomnia as it is naturally sleep inducing.

• Boil 400ml of water, add some aniseed tea leaves, simmer for 10-15 mins, add some honey and milk if you like the taste.

Warm milk with honey and cookies 20-25 mins before bed can help you fall asleep easily. Be careful not to eat more than 2-3 cookies as you probably don’t need the extra calories from sugar and fat.

• High fiber cereals, nuts and pulses can help fix the sleeplessness as they contain thiamine- vitamin B. If your body lacks this vitamin over a long period of time, you will find it hard to fall asleep easily.

Complex carbohydrates can stimulate the brain’s sedative neurotransmitters, have a bowl of whole grain cereal half an hour before bed.

• Massage some curd on your head, this will help you sleep.

• Two to three teaspoons of honey in a glass of water may induce sleep as honey is known to have a hypnotic effect.

What to Do / What not to Do :

• Keep active, exercise regularly 4-5 times a week: cycling, swimming, jogging, running or whatever you fancy.

Meditation and yoga help you relax physically and mentally, yoga practitioners and meditators report increased quality of sleep.

• Avoid drinks or foods that contain high amounts of caffeine.

• Do not eat heavy oily foods, especially at night. Try and eat a balanced and healthy diet.

• Use earplugs if your room is not totally quiet. Earplugs seem to help even when the room is quiet, it is easier to fall asleep listening to your own breathing.

Keep your mind blank in bed, try and not think about your problems while falling asleep.

• If you are having a trouble sleeping properly at night, avoid naps during the day. Naps are great but they will make it harder for you to fall asleep.

• Get comfortable pillows and mattress, your bed shouldn’t be too soft or too hard and your pillow just right.

• Quit smoking and avoid drinking alcohol as they deplete your bodily fluids and may cause sleep problems.

Sleeping pills are not your best bet as they come with side effects- snoring, sleep apnea, dulling the brain and even lowering the IQ and may make you feel drowsy the next day.
