Milk Free Diet Can Give You the Calcium You Need

We’ve all seen those milk ads that tell us about the goodness of milk and how much healthier we will be by drinking milk every day. But several recent university research papers claim otherwise: You will simply be better off by sticking to a dairy-free diet than with a diet that includes milk.

I often tell people not to drink milk and consume more of other calcium-rich foods. After all, certain green vegetables contain more calcium than pasteurized, homogenized milk that is full of antibiotics and growth hormones.

Most of you must be thinking ‘how on earth am I going to get enough calcium and avoid bone diseases like osteoporosis if I don’t drink milk?’.. Well, by simply eating more of other healthy foods that are rich in calcium: Salmon and sardines, green beans, garbanzo beans, onions, sesame tahini, cauliflower, okra and other green leafy vegetables..

Milk and dairy can easily mean lactose intolerance and milk protein allergies to a great percentage of the population and they often appear in the form of symptoms such as terrible headaches and migraine, weight gain, fatigue and more. Some studies even link dairy consumption to cardiovascular disease, elevated cholesterol, diabetes and prostate cancer.

Milk does not even provide a sufficient supply of calcium, despite what you may have been taught all your life. By the time the milk is processed, enriched, homogenized and pasteurized, there is not much calcium left from it that is usable by the body, which can also explain why there are increased cases of osteoporosis in the world.

Are you also trying to lose weight and / or maintain your ideal weight? Here is another reason why you should avoid milk and adhere to a diet that is rich in green leafy vegetables as the main source of calcium: Vegetables are very low in calories and high in dietary fibre by nature. And by keeping away from sugar, artificial sweeteners, coffee and drinks that contain acid, you will have more calcium left for your bone health.

If you must drink milk, go for the organic milk as it tends to be free of synthetic hormones, antibiotics, harmful pesticides, artificial chemical ingredients. However, your body will still not be able to absorb a great deal of calcium from organic milk as it is processed the same way as the normal milk. So my advice would still be to not drink milk at all, or try it for ten days to start with and see if you will feel any differently.

Please keep in mind that dairy-free diet does not only mean milk free diet. It means avoiding all foods that contain dairy: milk, butter, different kinds of cheese, sour cream, cream, milk powder, ice cream and baked foods that contain dairy. So if you decide to go dairy- free, you’ll need to avoid all these foods and more. And use the resources available online to learn more about good nutrition, eating well and be healthier with a dairy-free diet.
